Fwd: And then there was light...

Davis passed these along this morning. Put a smile on my face and a tear in my eye. I especially love the "Natulenge Kilele" sign with the light shining. Pretty amazing.

Congratulations to everyone who has played a small or large role in this accomplishment. Davis -- please pass on our congratulations and joy to the folks in Ikumbo.

love,

matt

Harambee for All Children (HFAC)

We strive to improve the quality of education in resource‐poor settings through creative partnerships with communities and governments. Our goal is to empower every child with the opportunity to learn and achieve his or her full potential.

Dear supporter,

In 2006 we began our work with the community of Ikumbo, Kenya. In a country where more than 85% of children attend primary school, very few students proceed to secondary school. Previously Ikumbo was representative of this struggle, sending only 1 in 10 students to secondary schools in the region. In May 2007, alongside the community of Ikumbo and the government of Kenya we began construction of the Ikumbo Secondary School. In 4 years of operation, more than 150 students have attended the school, where the facilities now include a classroom for each grade, teacher offices, a science laboratory, and a community library. In 2010, the school graduated its first class of 19 students.

Still, only 2% of students in Kenya attend tertiary education of any form. Our goal is to send 100% of Ikumbo students to college. In 2011, we take a big step toward this aim with the anticipated enrollment of 18 out of 19 graduates in technical college programs. They will study for degrees in fields ranging from accounting to auto mechanics.

Parents, teachers, and community members have come together to form the Ikumbo Education Trust to award scholarships in partnership with HFAC to ensure that every student receives full support. Degree programs generally require 2 years of study, with specialized programs in Certified Public Accounting needing 4 years. The cost of each year at Masai Institute is $605 / per student. Thus far the community has raised more than $3,500 toward this goal. HFAC has pledged to meet the outstanding need, as well as make contributions to the trust for future classes.

In a recent letter to Harambee for All Children Co-Founder and Ikumbo-native Davis Karambi, President Bill Clinton shared encouragement in this mission.

Please join us in answering this call in support of the youth of Ikumbo, Kenya. Consider sponsoring a student for the period of a semester, a year, or two years. If you are interested, send an email to harambeeforallchildren@gmail.com, or to Jennifer Berrent (Jennifer.Berrent@wilmerhale.com) for more information. At that time we will send you a personal story of a student in Ikumbo. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Matthew Gartland, Davis Karambi, and Ravi Raju
